A Transformed Cottage in the City

Our clients, Luke & Olwyn, first approached us during the summer of 2023 – they had undergone the tricky process of purchasing their first home in a place that they hold dear to their heart; a quaint, artisanal cottage located in Stoneybatter, Co. Dublin.

The property was dark and dated, the internal layout made the space feel far from functional – so we focused on reconfiguring it to align more with how they live on a day to day basis.

At the front of the home, privacy and letting natural light into the home was a priority, so we created a front hallway/corridor with crittall-style doors – giving the home privacy from the street. We used space saving pocket doors which recessed into the walls, the reeded glass panels on the doors let natural light pass through to the central living space.

In the living room, we designed tall bespoke timber wall paneling to create a sense of division between the dining area and the living area – also we wanted to draw the eye up to the beautiful, original high ceilings. This custom piece also features a bespoke bench and open shelving beneath.

Our client loves cooking and having a kitchen where they can cook with gusto but also chat to their dinner guests was a priority – so we suggested connecting the kitchen and living area, creating an open plan layout. The slatted oak room divider frames the dining area beautifully, breaking up the space but also maintaining the flow of natural light.

The upper section of the kitchen was kept open plan, we installed an open shelf which feels bright and fresh – a nice contrast to the dark kitchen cabinetry.

The entrance to the main bedroom is through a secret door in the living room, we changed the location of the door swings and incorporated the concept of a secret door to create more novelty and add some whimsy to the space. These changes also meant we could introduce a more sizeable wardrobe space to the bedroom.

This bespoke unit is home to the client’s mini-bar – designed to mirror the secret door to the bedroom.

Huge thank you to our clients for letting us shot their beautiful home, to Ruth Calder-Potts for her incredible photography and of course to our interior designer Emma Delaney for her stunning interior design work.
